The Price of Progress

The opening sentence in this article states; " until recently, government planners have always considered economic development and progress beneficial goals that all societies should want to strive toward..." after watching, Whose Counting, in class we learned however, that something as disastrous as a massive oil spill is looked at as economically awesome to government planners. Also in Empty Nets we have read about the affects of dams on tribal lands and the devastation of the fishing world, and its creatures. Now, dietary changes, diseases, and malnutrition, ecocide, and deprivation are all "prices of progress" brought on by industrial civilization. In years to come we'll slowly, or even more quickly, see the rest of the Earth deteriorating around us due to these "beneficial goals, and economic development."
