Law, Custom and Crimes Against Women

Wowzas...after reading this article I looked up more current statistics on the dowry deaths of India, and amazingly they are still rising. According to the National Crime Records Bureau in 2007, 1 dowry related suicide happens every 4 hours in India, at least 6 a day on average. The worst part- at least 1 is registered every hour being ruled out as murder. How is this tradition still thriving in this day and age? In 1961 the Dowry Prohibition Act was passed, yet the numbers are still rising, and there is numerous reports of the young women abusing the law to harass their husbands and family members for money, easy divorce, and child custody... it seems like a problem with no end...
