In the very beginning of the article when the author was discussing the specific incident of Mrs. Sunita, it sounded as if the negotiations for the dowry were useless because the husband's family were allowed to keep demanding more. Also, what are these people hoping to gain by harassing the new wife? It doesn't seem as though she has any money of her own or she probably would have given it up to keep from being burned alive. And excuse me for asking this, but why is it that there are so many husband/mother/family teams that are actually willing to commit murder because of dowry? 478 deaths in 1986, that's at least 478 people who killed a new member of their family because of money. I understand that dowry has a religious aspect and represents an obligation from the father of the new wife, and that might make individuals take it more seriously than if it was just a monetary value, but really? The article also states that the laws set in place have completely failed to even help lower instances of "dowry death". I can't even write any more on this article, I am disgusted.
