I believe the first theme, the women's stories or reasons for becoming prostitutes, is the most important theme. Sterk didn't tell us whether or not she delved into the information of how big a socioeconomic "fall" these women took when they became prostitues, which I think would be an interesting facet to the article. It is relevant I think that it is acknowledged that these women's stories include "justifications" of how they became prostitutes, considering that it is such a socially taboo occupation. One would never provide justifications for say, how they became a lawyer or social worker because these careers are valued, but since prostitution is unsavory it is assumed that no individual would actively pursue this path.
The exception to this is legal prostitution. The legalization of prostitution, and adhering to the regulations and laws that allow it to be legal, raises the value of it as a career and there are those individuals who view it as a legitimate career. By following the regulations the law enforces it makes prostitution safer and more lucrative for the women. Though in this country the majority of prostitutes are not legal and don't have the opportunity to become legitimate in the government's eyes because the only place this is allowed is Nevada.
